Locations struck were in the area of the James Wiggins Road and the Fire Department Road. Martin County Sheriff Tim Manning confirmed his of fice is working many leads in these cases. “Anytime you hear some thing or see something that doesn’t seem right around your property or a neighbor’s, that is the time to call law en forcement,” Manning affirmed. “Please call at the time of con cern and let us figure out what is going on.” Manning reminds residents deputies are trained and in place to assist and are most willing to do so. Civility takes lead, Rodgers elected Mayor Pro-Tempore MacGray SARXH HODGES STALLS Enterprise & Weekly Herald WILLIAMSTON - After the De cember election of Commis sioner Ronell Rodgers as Wil- liamston’s Mayor Pro Tempore was set aside following proce dural concerns, a new vote was held during the January meet ing Monday night. Mayor Joyce Whichard-Brown explained the process would be conducted by way of the nomi nation and ballot method. Prior to the nomination pro cess, Commissioner Jerry Knox clarified his intent behind vot ing for this position. “First of all. I’d like to say when 1 vote, 1 am not voting against anybody on this board. We’ve got some good people on this board,” Knox said. “When it comes time, 1 am going to have to vote for Mr. A1 Chesson. He’s been doing this for 40 years, he runs a business probably bigger than the town of Williamston and it’s impor tant to be business oriented and to be able to make business de cisions. Those are the reasons why 1 would have to vote for Mr. Chesson. Again, 1 am not voting against anybody because 1 like all of you,” he added. William Coffield responded. “All that is true, but in any job or anything, when someone is elected new it helps to be trained.” He continued, “God forbid if See RODGERS, A6 The Edgecombe County Sheriffs Office is asking for assistance in the search for a miss ing man who has been known to frequent the Oak City area. Accord ing to law enforce- m e n t , Stephen MacGray, who suf fers from dementia, was last seen Friday, Jan. 3 around 4 p.m. After an extensive search by the family, he was reported missing on Tuesday. MacGray is 5’ 6” inch es tall and weighs 145 lbs. According to a media release from the sher iff’s office, MacGray is known to frequent areas between Princeville and Oak City. Nominations sought for Service Awards LESLIE BEACHBOARD Enterprise & Weekly Herald WILLIAMSTON - Nominations are now being accepted for the 2020 Governor’s Volun teer Service Award through out Martin County. The award program, created by the Office of the Governor in 1979, recognizes North Car olina’s most dedicated volun teers. The Governor’s Volunteer Service Award honors the true spirit of volunteerism by rec ognizing individuals, groups, and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through vol unteer service. Any person, group or entity from the public, non-profit and private sector may be nominated for an award to their county award coordina tor. County award coordinators submit their top 10 volunteer nominations per county. There are categories for the types of nominees are senior, youth, faith-based, family, group and businesses. Additional categories are based upon the area of ser vice, including animal, envi ronmental, disaster, youth and preservation. The commission reviews county recommendations and awards are given out in the counties.
